WHAT STARTED THE WELL MINISTRIES?

The Well Ministries began in April 1999 when Kris Rhoades, who had suffered many years of depression, was miraculously healed at a women’s retreat. Her recovery came mostly from a positive change of attitude and change of perspective. She had a revelation from the Lord about the Samaritan woman and how many women could relate to her. The Lord then gave Kris a vision of printing a newsletter with inspirational and encouraging stories to help other women suffering from depression. Because of her strong desire to help and encourage others through the same situations she had been through, she planned to distribute the newsletter free of charge. The first issue of 300 copies was ready one week later.

The need for this type of publication was greater than ever anticipated and all copies were gone so quickly that they began the second issue and changed the format to the current version to automate production. This second issue was increased to 1000 copies; 85% of those were distributed in less than one week. The amount printed for each of the next few issues was increased and distributed just as quickly. Throughout the first year, over 41,000 copies were printed and distributed free of charge to individuals, churches, food banks, and prison ministries. April 2004, The Well’s 5th Anniversary, marked the 27th issue with nearly 110,000 copies in distribution. It now reaches to 31 states and several foreign countries.

In December 1999 a puppet ministry that Lou and Kris Rhoades started at another local church eight years before was donated to The Well Ministries. “Puppets for the King” continues to be a favorite activity for many churches and organizations.

“Chalice” began in March 2000 from the members of the worship team at The First Church of the Open Bible, McKeesport, PA and was incorporated into The Well Ministries. The singing ministry shares the Gospel in song, word and testimony at nursing homes, other churches, etc. and includes musicians as well as vocalists.

The official organization was established in December 1999. In September 2000 they received a 501(c)(3) classification from the Internal Revenue Service making the ministry an official non-profit charity.
