In 1999 after suffering from depression most of her life, Kris Rhoades was miraculously healed during a women’s retreat. The Lord spoke to her that weekend of how many other women are much like “the woman at the well” suffering from rejection, depression, hopelessness, and more. These women have a longing for something in their life that Jesus is waiting to fill.
As with any other organization, this one was started because there was a problem and we had a solution!
THE PROBLEM
Many people wake each day with a feeling of hopelessness and fear, worrying what each day will bring. Will there be enough money to pay the bills? Will there be enough work to keep their job? In addition, our family structure is crumbling in record numbers. As the divorce rate continues to rise, the financial burdens on families cause a sense of hopelessness. It is no wonder that crime, violence, sex, drug use, suicide and abortion have become a way of life for our young people.
Statistically, 1 in 5 Americans suffer from some sort of depression. Depression is one of the most common, most misdiagnosed and most serious mental health problems facing people today. Over 17 million Americans suffer from depressive illnesses each year. Of those millions 80% can be effectively treated, but only 30% seek help. Of that number, slightly more than half are accurately diagnosed and receive appropriate treatment. It is clear that depression involves a variety of interacting causes stemming from both the person and from the environment.
Depressive illnesses left untreated can become fatal. More people die from suicide than homicide. The number one cause of suicide is untreated depression. 95% of all suicides occur at the peak of a depressive episode. Suicide is the ninth leading cause of death in the United States and it is the third leading cause of death in young people aged 15-24.
THE SOLUTION
One way to help a depressed person is to give them some comfort, to let them see they are not alone. It is our vision to give people a ray of hope – something they can hold on to – to help them cope – by providing encouraging and inspirational stories. These stories give them hope that things are not as bad as they seem. It is like dropping them a rope – a lifeline – to help them out of the pit.
The main purpose of this ministry is to produce a booklet of inspirational and encouraging stories called “The Well.” This publication is distributed free of charge, making them available to anyone regardless of ability to pay, and to as many people as we can afford to print copies for.
Some of the stories and poetry are written by local pastors and authors so our supply of material is unending. In addition readers are encouraged to submit stories or testimonies that may give an encouraging word to someone else.
OUR PROOF
The founder of The Well Ministries, Kristina M. Rhoades, suffered from years of depression and was healed. This ministry is her testimony.
